Excerpt from The Face of Transformation - Introduction

What I’ve found in my life is that the Word of God is the best tool we have for spiritual formation. So often books are either in the category of Bible study or spiritual for- mation, but they’re meant to go together. Understanding God’s Word is intended to be informative and formative. I hope you read this with a Bible nearby, and look not only at Jacob’s life, but at your own. The story of God has always celebrated the story of God’s people, and his face shining through them.

There’s two things I love about Jacob - he is a mess, and he is loved by God. Consider that this is the person we have one of the most in-depth looks into his home and personal life. But why him? What sets Jacob apart from the rest?

My hope is you see real transformation in your life

through the grace of God, and begin to imagine the im-

pact one life can have as a ripple effect on so many others. Because, as we’ll see, Jacob’s story isn’t just about him.

When God steps in, he can transform anyone.

How much of a difference can one person really make? If history is any indicator, we can easily come up with a dozen names of men and women who’s impact lived years after their lifetime, for better and for worse. So, while a single life transformed doesn’t sound like much, it’s just the beginning of entire households, even nations, becom- ing brand new!
